Dreadball – Maurauder Commission Continues!

I’ve now begun to get the yellow going on the Marauder commission, and it’s almost complete (taken me longer than expected :(),,,

Still need to add a brighter yellow around the edges to help highlight and brighten it a wee touch, and from there it’s onto the flesh 🙂

Dreadball – Marauder Team Commission

My first job of the new year, and it’s back to my beloved Marauders :D.

I have a client that’s looking to have a full team painted (5 Guards, Keeper, 8 Jacks and 2 prone markers), and is looking for them in the same colours as the Red Scorpions Space Marine Chapter. So over the last couple of days I’ve been working on the grey armour to get things started…

I achieved what I have here using the following paints:

Full coat of Ironhill Grey (P3)

Wash of Drakenhof Nightshade (GW)

Highlight of Ironhill Grey (P3)

Highlight of Codex Grey (GW)

Fine edge highlight of Fortress Grey (GW)

Now it’s onto a dirty yellow to get a wee bit of colour on these guys 🙂

Dreadball – Teraton Team Progress!

I’ve not had a lot of time to paint over the last few weeks, what with gearing up for Christmas and a few extra hours at my other job, but I’ve slowly been getting a little work done on the Teratons here and there when I can. I’ve now got the flesh to a stage where I’m happy to say it’s completed…

I think it contrasts really nicely with the light armour, and am especially pleased with how the striped effect work out, giving a more reptilian look :D. I have been distracted by some Deadzone minis over the last couple of days(more on them soon), but hoping to get more work done on these guys soon. Still trying to decide what I would like the detailing colour to be for them, but am thinking blue or orange, or one for the guards another for the jacks, time to ponder some more….

Dreadball – Teraton Team Started!

I started a few testers for Deadzone last week in the form of some enforcers, and unfortunately just couldn’t find a scheme that I was happy with for them. Luckily one of them caught my eye as the perfect colours for the Teratons that have been sitting in a case for a few weeks, so I got cracking into them…

I decided to try out some salt masking on these guys as I wanted a very used look to their armour and I think it came out very nicely. To do this I followed these steps:

1. I painted the whole model with a 2:1 mix of Doombull Brown and Trollslayer Orange

2. Applied a coat of hairspray(just bog standard cheap stuff) and before it was dry sprinkled some salt over the areas I wanted chipping.

3. Once the previous coat was dry I airbrushed over a coat of Rakkarth Flesh, followed by a lighter spray of Menoth White Highlight

4. I applied a good amount of warm water over the models and let them sit for five minutes, I then went over them with a brush carefully removing the salt.

5. Finally I applied highlights with White Scar, focusing on catching the bottom of each chip.

Next up will be the flesh, which as you can see in the image of the guards I’ve already got an idea of where I want to go with it, good old turquoise :D. Not only did I have the team to do, also lots of extras…

I also thought I’d get some use out of the prize I received from the recent Dreadball tournament by making him into the Coach for the Teratons, which I’ll be doing with Gabe as well(for the Zee’s once I get back to them :))

Dreadball – Zee Team Started!

Well, I couldn’t resist these cheeky wee monkeys :D. I’ve always been a fan of playing the ‘funny’ teams shall we say. I’m into gaming for the enjoyment, the story and the general banter that you get from it, not for the win or the competition. I think the Zee’s are going to be a great laugh to play with and lead to some very funny situations :). I’ve only got some base colours on the minis at present and here’s how they are looking…

Zee's

Zee’s

I decided to go for a colour scheme I had used on my old Tyranids, Hive Fleet Urb-Nri, which as you may be able to tell (from the name or the colours) is based off of a famous Scottish beverage. As such the working name for these guys is currently the Irn Brusrz 🙂

Dreadball – Hazard Stripe Threat Markings

IMG_5834

Been asked by a few folk how the threat markings on the Gamma Slammers was achieved and felt the easiest way to show people would be to put together a wee tutorial.

So first up here’s the supplies I used:

Clear Hex, Chaos Black, Mechanicus Standard Grey, Codex Grey, Tau Light Ochre, Yriel Yellow & Skull White

Clear Hex, Chaos Black, Mechanicus Standard Grey, Codex Grey, Tau Light Ochre, Yriel Yellow & Skull White

Before I continue I will state I use a wet pallet, which means if you don’t I’d recommend watering down the colours slightly during each step. Anyway onto the first coat, which is just staright black over the threat area. You may need a couple of coats to get a flat black.

Jpeg

The next stage is adding the base of the stripes. I do this by eye, which can leave them a little uneven in places, but there are many masking tapes out there that would be perfect for getting it just right. I used Tau Light Ochre to paint three stripes on each hex facing(again, a couple of coats may be needed)…

Jpeg

It’s then on to some highlighting. I painted Yriel yellow onto the right(as you’re looking at the hex) and top of each of the lines leaving a little of the base colour showing through on the bottom left corner.

Jpeg

Following this I mixed a wee bit of white into the yellow and added another small highlight in the right top corner of each stripe…

JpegWith that the yellow is done. Now is a good time to go back with the black and clean up any slippages or uneven lines. Then its a similar method to highlight the black. A line of Mechanicum Standard Grey was painted down the right and along the top of each of the black lines…

Jpeg

And to finish it off a wee bit of Codex Grey was painted in the top right corner…

Jpeg

And there you have it. That’s how I painted the threat markings for the Slammers 😀

Dreadball – MVPs out the Wazoo

MVP-Group

Well I’ve been feeling under the weather for the last few days, which is good and bad. The good is loads of painting has been done whilst I recuperate, the bad is I’ve not been able to get any photos to show all you lovely people what I’ve been up to :(. Starting at the weekend I decided to blast through the MVPs I have had sitting for a wee while, as well as the six(Blaine, Painmaster Yurik, Riller, Milesandre, Wyn Greth’zki and Nightshade) that I’m painting up for a mate in return for the Marauder and Corp boosters used to add the reinforcements you saw last week to the Slammers and Centurions. Anyway, enough blabbering from me, here they are…

Blaine

Blaine

This guy was a joy to paint. The model is absolutely brilliant. I didn’t want to deviate too much from the standard scheme, but a hint of turquoise always makes things look better 😀

Painmaster Yurik

Painmaster Yurik

Another fantastic model who I thought looked great in the Mantic images so stuck with that scheme.

Riller

Riller

This guy I’m not so much of a fan of and I think it shows in the paint job :(, gonna have to go back and do up/add a bit more to him until I’m a bit happier.

Wyn Greth'zki

Wyn Greth’zki

Was’nt a fan of this chap, but surprisingly enjoyed painting him. The scheme for this guy came from googling a certain famous hockey player (bet you can’t guess which one :-P) and matching the jersey colour.

Nightshade

Nightshade

This is probably one of my favorite MVP models, and also the one I felt was the easiest to paint. Won’t bloody well stand up though

Mellisandra

Mellisandra

I really hated this model when I first saw it, and this one sat tauntingly on my desk until last. But after just the first layer of turquoise I began to like it more and more (turquoise REALLY does make everything better :D). I think its because the studio paint job really doesn’t show off the details of the model, not saying it’s bad, just not right for this mini.

Number 88

Number 88

Another fantastic mini, and one I wanted to keep fairly simple.

Ludwig

Ludwig

This gentleman was painted up to go alongside my Z’zor team, but with a slightly darker green to add a slight variance. This one was a pain in the arse to be honest, the sheer amount of mold lines was ridiculous, and I kept finding more once painting had begun :(.

Wildcard

Wildcard

Being a Tron fan I loved this mini from the first time I saw it and could not resist doing it in the standard colour scheme.

The Praetorian

The Praetorian

And finally this massive chap(seriously, he’s bloody massive). This one I wanted to keep fairly simple and utilitarian, they are meant to be disposable combat robots aren’t they?

All that’s left on these guys now is a few numbers on the backs and some hexes (in the post :)) with the appropriate threat markings, and then it will be onto painting up my next team. I’ve decided to go for a bit of a Scottish theme on them which will hearken back to my first proper 40k force.

The whole team is now painted and ready to play :D, with the addition of the Alt sculpts I’m up to 13 players, and speaking of the alts sculpts here’s how they look up close…

Very happy with how they’ve all turned out, and will probably use these in the next league I take part in. There’s only a couple of things I want to do before that. Firstly I’m gonna try sticking a dreadball glove to the Big Mech, and secondly get them a pitch like the Gamma Slammers. I’ve popped this up before, but in case you didn’t see it, here’s the Silver Centurions field the Coliseum…

"The Coliseum"

“The Coliseum”

Might be a while before I do that though, still got some tweaks I want to make based on how the Gamma Dome came out and I may go with another printer for this one and try out something a bit more local…

Dreadball – Silver Centurion Reinforcements

After finishing off the Gamma Slammers I’ve moved onto adding the finishing touches to the Centurions and here’s how they’re looking so far:

Still a fair bit of work to be done on them until theyre finished though. Whilst painting them I have noticed a wee bit of a scaling issue, especially with the Jack. He seems to be taller even than an Orc guard, which seems a little odd. Don’t know if anyone else has noticed this? Not that it matters, he can just be given the cliched nickname of ‘Tiny’ 😀

Dreadball – Dunedin VI Mega Bowl Results!

The Gamma Slammers did well in their first ever league, not quite taking the top spot this time though.

It turned out to be a fairly small event with five teams competing; 2 Marauder teams including the Slammers, 2 Corp teams , a Judwan team with some Teratons to even up the numbers. The Silver Centurions even made an appearance as one of the Corp teams, as a mate needed a lend of a team. Here’s some photos from the day:

It was a great laugh and a fun time was had by all with everyone getting 4 games in over the course of the day and here’s how the slammers results looked:

Game 1: Gamma Slammers Vs Boner Corp

0-7

Game 2: Gamma Slammers Vs Silver Centurions

0-0

Game 3: Gamma Slammers Vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Teratons

7-0

Game 4: Gamma Slammers Vs Judwan

7-0

Overall the Slammers performed well in all their games, with the offensive coach being an outstanding help throughout. Its the first thing I would get for the Marauders (if not most teams) straight off the bat. The ability to get a Goblin moving that fast is incredible, in one game a goblin managed to get from the centre line, to my end of the pitch, then back across to a strike zone and go for the throw! Even though I got off to a very shaky start, the great results in the second half of the day managed to pull me up the leader board and into second place :D, with the boner Corp netting the top prize, after 7 landslides and a 4-0 victory, they deserved it, with the coach receiving Ultimate, a medal, a trophy and the Dino riding kid (forget his name). My second place prizes were pretty spiffing too though….

Second Place Prizes

Second Place Prizes

That’s a Dreadball trophy and James ‘The Vet’ Syler, which I am well chuffed with, especially the MVP who I think is gonna be a Teraton coach for now :). Not only that but I also managed to get a prize for best painted, a season 1 cover print signed by Jake Thornton and Ronnie Renton…

Best Painted Prize

Best Painted Prize

I’ll have to frame that up :D.

Didn’t manage to get any kills at all throughout the day, which is a big surprise considering their bloodstained past, but I put it down to them not wanting to sully their brand new pitch. My pitch arrived just in time on Friday and I’m very happy with the result. A couple of mistakes have been made by me on the design, specifically the overly dark subs and injuries areas, as well as an incorrect line up marker :(. Here’s a closer look:

A big thank you goes out to Pathfinder Neil Collins for arranging and running the whole thing, as well as all the players who helped make it an awesome time 😀
