Dreadball – Maurauder Commission Continues!

I’ve now begun to get the yellow going on the Marauder commission, and it’s almost complete (taken me longer than expected :(),,,

Still need to add a brighter yellow around the edges to help highlight and brighten it a wee touch, and from there it’s onto the flesh 🙂

Dreadball – Marauder Team Commission

My first job of the new year, and it’s back to my beloved Marauders :D.

I have a client that’s looking to have a full team painted (5 Guards, Keeper, 8 Jacks and 2 prone markers), and is looking for them in the same colours as the Red Scorpions Space Marine Chapter. So over the last couple of days I’ve been working on the grey armour to get things started…

I achieved what I have here using the following paints:

Full coat of Ironhill Grey (P3)

Wash of Drakenhof Nightshade (GW)

Highlight of Ironhill Grey (P3)

Highlight of Codex Grey (GW)

Fine edge highlight of Fortress Grey (GW)

Now it’s onto a dirty yellow to get a wee bit of colour on these guys 🙂

New Toys – Deadzone!

There was a great haul of hobby goodies here at Deathwatch Studios over the hobby period, with the most exciting for me being Deadzone! My lovely wife managed to get a hold of the boxed game for me and immediately lamented the decision as I went into hiding to build it all :D. Today I’m going to give you a run down of how I found the contents of the box as well as the Rebs Faction Booster :).

Tokens – The card tokens that come with the game are a much higher quality than expected, and look like they would have a much longer life than the Dreadball ones. They’ve got a good design asthetic in keeping with the game and you get more than enough to see you through. The acrylic version on the other hand is a bit more disappointing than the Dreadball equivalent, with hard to see designs. It’s not the end of the world though, as they are very vibrantly coloured, so it’s just a case of learning what colour means what.

I also picked up a set of the resin equipment crates as they add that little extra character to a game. These are very good for the £8 they cost, with great quality casting on both the crates themselves and the lids which include the different equipment designs.

Terrain & Mat – The playmat the game comes with is the same kind of mouse-matty material that the Ultimate game uses, and as with that it is nothing short of superb. It’s easily stored, looks great and has the advantage of a good amount of traction for both the models and the terrain.

The terrain is also absolutely superb. The connector method that Mantic have gone with works very well. Each section as sets of two holes in the same areas which the connectors then plug into, giving the opportunity to build/dismantle the terrain with ease. Although I’ve gone down the gluing route (I’d rather get more terrain to have a few options than have to sit and poke out connectors after a game :)). Another great thing with the terrain is there is next to no visible mold lines due to the way it all tapers at the edges, meaning it can be built up with minimal effort. Finally it’s amazingly modular, even when glued up. I had an amazing amount of fun after building up the two sets I have just making up different board layouts, figuring out where walkways could go and building up the levels :). Here’s a couple I came up with:

The Factions – I’ve now built up both the Rebs and the Plague, as these are the factions I would like to play with. I originally was going to go with the Enforcers, but due to the high cost per model, it would mean a very restrictive force, where as the Rebs especially have a huge amount of variety and a good amount of cheapness.

Both Factions were very easy to clean, with the only real problem being a mold line right down the Reb Commanders face and all look fantastic. My only big gripe is some of the models are placed onto the disc with tabs on their feet, as I would rather have them flush to the base, but a wee bit of careful cutting got rid of those.

As you can see with the Rebs I may have gone a little crazy and got a few extra troopers. This is because they are so cheap I wanted a lot more flexibility in what I could take, and considering all of these guys wouldn’t fill up the roster in a campaign, I can’t wait to get the extra specialists that aren’t available yet.

The Rules – The rulebook is much the same as other Mantic books. It looks great, with a nice crisp feel and great graphics. The rules themselves read well, with only a little confusion that works itself out when you have a play through and feel very unique (if you discount Dreadball). The only problem I have with the book is a lack of a reference page, which would have been really handy saving time flipping through the book.

I’ve only played a few games so far, so keep your eye’s peeled, as I will do a wee right up once I’ve played a bit more and have got my head around it a little bit more 😀

2013 in Review!

Well it was a busy year for Deathwatch Studios in 2013 and I thought I’d show off all the miniatures that got painted in those 12 months in my first post of 2014 (lazy I know :D), come and take a look…

Dreadball – Teraton Team Progress!

I’ve not had a lot of time to paint over the last few weeks, what with gearing up for Christmas and a few extra hours at my other job, but I’ve slowly been getting a little work done on the Teratons here and there when I can. I’ve now got the flesh to a stage where I’m happy to say it’s completed…

I think it contrasts really nicely with the light armour, and am especially pleased with how the striped effect work out, giving a more reptilian look :D. I have been distracted by some Deadzone minis over the last couple of days(more on them soon), but hoping to get more work done on these guys soon. Still trying to decide what I would like the detailing colour to be for them, but am thinking blue or orange, or one for the guards another for the jacks, time to ponder some more….

Dreadball – Teraton Team Started!

I started a few testers for Deadzone last week in the form of some enforcers, and unfortunately just couldn’t find a scheme that I was happy with for them. Luckily one of them caught my eye as the perfect colours for the Teratons that have been sitting in a case for a few weeks, so I got cracking into them…

I decided to try out some salt masking on these guys as I wanted a very used look to their armour and I think it came out very nicely. To do this I followed these steps:

1. I painted the whole model with a 2:1 mix of Doombull Brown and Trollslayer Orange

2. Applied a coat of hairspray(just bog standard cheap stuff) and before it was dry sprinkled some salt over the areas I wanted chipping.

3. Once the previous coat was dry I airbrushed over a coat of Rakkarth Flesh, followed by a lighter spray of Menoth White Highlight

4. I applied a good amount of warm water over the models and let them sit for five minutes, I then went over them with a brush carefully removing the salt.

5. Finally I applied highlights with White Scar, focusing on catching the bottom of each chip.

Next up will be the flesh, which as you can see in the image of the guards I’ve already got an idea of where I want to go with it, good old turquoise :D. Not only did I have the team to do, also lots of extras…

I also thought I’d get some use out of the prize I received from the recent Dreadball tournament by making him into the Coach for the Teratons, which I’ll be doing with Gabe as well(for the Zee’s once I get back to them :))

Deadzone – Enforcers Started!

The release of Deadzone is right around the corner and I’m getting really excited :D. It looks like its gonna be a lot of fun, miniature wise and rules wise, with a good amount of stuff coming out with the first wave; http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/pre-order/deadzone.html. I unfortunately did not get in on the Kickstarter :(, which in retrospect would have meant another pile of minis to paint rather than a steady flow ;). From the look of things its the enforcers I’m gonna start off with (until either the Forge Fathers or the Asterions, they look awesome), and thought the best place to start is the boxgame although that may not be until the end of December. Due to this I wanted to at least get something done and had a few enforcers lying about(thanks to a competition on Tales of a Tabletop Skirmisher)…

First Enforcers

Gonna use these chaps as testers for a few colour schemes and once I’ve settled I’ve got another five to add to that. Should keep me going until I can get my hands on the big box of awesomeness 😀

Dreadball – Zee Team Started!

Well, I couldn’t resist these cheeky wee monkeys :D. I’ve always been a fan of playing the ‘funny’ teams shall we say. I’m into gaming for the enjoyment, the story and the general banter that you get from it, not for the win or the competition. I think the Zee’s are going to be a great laugh to play with and lead to some very funny situations :). I’ve only got some base colours on the minis at present and here’s how they are looking…

Zee's

Zee’s

I decided to go for a colour scheme I had used on my old Tyranids, Hive Fleet Urb-Nri, which as you may be able to tell (from the name or the colours) is based off of a famous Scottish beverage. As such the working name for these guys is currently the Irn Brusrz 🙂

Hordes – Trollblood Battlegroup!

I managed to pick up a metal Trollblood Battlegroup for a pretty good price, and as with Warmachine, thought it the best place to start my Trollblood force.

Impalers & Axer

These guys are chunky but sufficiently pinned to the gills :D. Looking forward to painting these, as it will be interesting trying to get the flesh colour right :/

Warmachine – Captain Caine Finished

Captain Allister Caine

Added the final touches to this wonderful chap, and now have my first warcaster ready to rock. As I stated previously I have loved painting this miniature up, it was a great sculpt with just the right amount of details so as not to overload the miniature, but to still have some interesting bits here and there. With the rest of the starter box finished off now all I need to do is find an adult to teach me how to play 😀
