Tabletop Gaming – Descent: Legends of the Dark Painting Guides Part 2

My latest guide sees me working my way through a massive game from Fantasy Flight. Descent: Legends of the Dark is a reboot of a classic dungeon crawler. The second part of my guides covers the enemies of the game.

This guide can be found in Issue 60.

Just like the heroes before them, the enemies are stunning models. There’s a great variety, something usually missing from core set enemies, that really adds to the feeling of a living, breathing world. The detail is superb as well, these are not your usual board game minis. Each one oozes character and have a real feel of dynamism, such as the bandit leaping through a cloud of smoke.

I’m really excited to see what they do in future expansions.

Take a look at the finished models…

Star Wars – Spectre Cell

A recent commission involving the stars of Rebels, the crew of the Ghost, Spectre Cell.

Always a fan of Star Wars projects, especially consisting of so many awesome characters. I worked with the Imperial Assault minis for the most part, with the Legion Sabine being the only alt model.

Took a lot of scouring reference pictures, but I’m very happy with the way they turned out…

A Year in Pictures 2018

Well it’s been a long year and I have been spotty at best with keeping up with this, hence the delay in getting it out there.

I set out to keep track of how many models I paint in a year, not with a specific goal in mind or as a figure to beat, but to just have a look at the numbers. So without further ado my painted figure count for 2018 was…

175

Not a bad number to be honest, but this year I think I’ll break it down even more. I want to look at how many figures I paint for each game that comes my way, board game, tabletop, or anything else that may happen. This is one ofthe things I’ll be adding to my painting goals for the year, which I’ll talk about soon.

Anyway, enough rambling, here’s the 175 models I painted this year…

A Month in Pictures – February 2018

The second month roles by and it seems to be the month of franchises, with Star Wars, Dr. Who and Batman all being represented.

I’m happy with the progress I made this month. Nothing to really challenge myself, or an attempt at a new technique though, so I need to ensure I pursue this in March.

Let’s take a look at all of the models I painted this month…

Painted in February: 22

Total painted in 2018: 39

A Month in Pictures – January 2018

So the new year has arrived and I wanted to add a wee progress marker to the blog each month, so I can take stock of how much mini’s I actually get through in a year. It’s also so I can track my progress, particularly in regards to the hobby goals I’m giving myself(more on that another time), and see how far I can push myself.

Let’s take a look at all of the models I painted this month…

Painted Model Count: 17

Total to Date: 17

Imperial Assault – More Empire Reinforcements!

This week I’ve been hard at work trying t add more reinforcements to the Empire see of my Imperial Assault set, still on that quest to providing a fully painted mission to my campaign players. The first thing I’ve been working on is some Viper Probe Droids…

probe-droids

Great models, but horrible to clean old lines from and I think they may need repaired often as they are only loosely attached to that base. These show off what I’m doing with the rim of my bases well though. Grey for standard deployments and red for the elite deployments, and as with previous groups I’ve used ProTech Models stencils to differentiate any that are the same.

I also tackled another group of Stormtroopers…

shadow-troopers

I want all my standard groups of Stormtroopers to be standard, run of the mill white but for the elite groups I wanted to do something a bit different. For this group I chose to do them as Shadowtroopers. I was inspired by a cloaking device upgrade that I have received in the campaign, and to keep things thematic I’ve decided I’ll only use it on this group. For the next elite group I think I’ll be doing them as Shocktroopers 🙂

Imperial Assault – Scum Reinforcements!

ig-88

I’ve been painting up even more Imperial Assault miniature’s in an attempt to let my players have at least one mission in our next session were everything we use is fully painted. This time I’ve been focussing on getting some mercenaries ready in the form of infamous bounty hunter IG-88 and a couple of Trandoshan hunters…

trandoshans

Whilst not much work was required on IG, I am really pleased how he turned out, especially since I didn’t want him to just be base metal. I wanted him to be a bit more dirtied up and well worn looking. I’m very pleased with how the Trandoshans turned out, particularly the flesh. I knew straight off the bat I wanted the flesh to be different colours and the pairing to be unified by the colour of the overalls. The only thing I’m not sure I like is the fact that when looking at the overalls combined with the white collar, all I can think of is this…

Maybe the Zorn have joined Star Fleet?

Imperial Assault – Han Solo!

The infamous smuggler, scoundrel and scruffy looking nerf herder has joined the group of painted models for my Imperial Assault games. I’ve been looking forward to this one, and he certainly didn’t let me down…

han-solo

I’m really loving the quality of the FFG plastic miniatures, and am finding the level of detail quite pleasing. Whilst for the most part they are just high end board game pieces comparable with the low end of your normal tabletop gaming miniatures, they do the job well for a fairly low cost. In addition they’ve also captured the essence of most of the characters quite well, which I think is something very important when it comes to something as beloved as Star Wars.

Star Wars Armada – Imperial Wave IV

title

I’ve just finished adding the last few touches to my wave IV(technically wave III & IV) reinforcements and added even more firepower to my Armada force.

I’ve only played a few games with each of the ships so far and I love how they work. Nothing has the sheer firepower of an ISD, so doesn’t make quite as big of a splash as when that was released, instead being a bit more subtle in the way that they change the shape of play.

intridictor

The Interdictor, on the face of it, comes across as a slightly weaker VSD that moves a touch better and costs more. Doesn’t really seem worth it. But where it really shines is in it’s upgrades and it’s sheer survivability. The ship adds a new upgrade slot, the ‘Experimental Retrofit’ slot and in it you can add lots of gravity manipulating shenanigans.

Whilst I won’t go into a huge amount of detail on it, I will say that I love this ship. It adds enough to the game to change up gameplay and fleet building tactics to a good degree, without making it feel overpowered. It was also a lot of fun to paint the addition of the grave well generators and central trench are nice ways to break up the classic grey space triangle look.

gozanti-group

The Gozantis are another great addition to the game and, like the Interdictor, don’t really look all that special on the face of things. Whilst they are weak, they are also cheap and disposable and above all else a really easy way to add more activations to your fleet. Just that will make them worth their points. Throw in another new upgrade slot type ‘Fleet Support’, which as the name may suggests makes the Gozantis more of a support unit, and you have another great addition to the game that changes everything in one hell of a good way.

I wanted o paint these up so that they each had squad markings an keep the red stripe theme going across all my ships. Here’s a closer look at each of the squads…

Imperial Assault – AT-ST’s!

title

This week I’ve been furiously painting one of the most impressive models to come out of an Imperial Assault box. Currently there are two versions of the infamous ‘chicken walker’, the standard version that we are all undoubtably fans of and the personal vehicle of the Imperial Assault campaigns villain, General Weiss.

I painted up both of these in much the same manner as each other as I didn’t want to stray from the Imperial standard too much, even if Weiss’s vehicle is something of an aberration, being packed with weapons systems. The only real difference I added was an imperial symbol on the front of Weiss’ craft.

In all honesty I was actually dreading painting these, as I really wasn’t sure how I would tackle these, but once I got started I could hardly put the brush down. These are such an iconic Star Wars vehicle and I think FFG have captured their look perfectly, though I’m not too much of a fan of the weapons on Weiss. I think they are a wee bit too bulky.

Check out the images of my finished AT-ST’s below…
