Dreadball – More Z’zor!

Heres another wee update on the Z’zor and the extra details I’ve added. Got the eyes and the reds done and dusted, but only just got the Turqouise bits started:

After I’ve finished off the Turquoise all thats really needing done is the numbers on their backs some final touch ups, and the clear hexes. I had an idea of what I wanted to do for the hexes, which was a thin strip of green with red at the centre. This ones a little wonky, and needs a little clean up, but you should get the idea 🙂

Dreadball – Z’zor update!

Back to the painting :D. I’m back to the hobby after a couple of weeks of extra normal work, and getting stuck into the third of my Dreadball teams, the Z’zor, and here’s how they’re looking:

I’m very pleased with how they’re coming along, with the main addition above and beyond the tester being the red in the joins. I think this helps tie the whole lot together quite nicely :). Still have a fair amount of work to put into these guys, and will be looking to get the turquoise armour sections, the reds and the eyes finished off for tomorrow…

Dreadball – Pitch Designs Update

I’ve been fairly busy over the last week, working some extra hours at my other job, which has meant a lack of painting time to get some updates on here. Unfortunately it looks like it will be the same until October :(. However it does mean some extra pennies for some cool stuff. I’ve already got some season 3 Dreadball goodies coming soon, which will include a Teraton team, season 3 book and dozer :D. I’ve also decided to invest in a couple of pitches for my current teams and have been working on finalising the designs for this and would love to get some feedback or see if there’s anything wrong anybody can spot. So first up we have a redo of the Gamma Slammers home field, the Gamma Dome:

And here’s the pitch for the Silver Centurions, the Coliseum:

I tried to keep them in a similar kinda design, they have the same team manager after all :D.

I’ve also been toying with the idea of making up some of the accessories for these pitches ie. the home/away fan cards, action tokens, and markers for the score/eye in the sky and this is what I’ve come up with:

home-&-away-cards

As I’ve said I would love to hear what you think, especially if you think there are any errors or such. and if anyone is looking to get a design done themselves feel free to get in touch through the contact page

Dreadball – Z’zor test model

Painted up a test model for the Z’zor today and here he is:

Would love to hear your thoughts on this guy as I’m still unsure on the colour choices. I’m pretty set on green being the main colour but unsure on the claws being the turquoise colour or the red sections. If you have any ideas, let me know 😀

Dreadball Tutorial – Dreadball Gloves

So, with getting a lot of praise for the Dreadball gloves on the Silver Centurions (Really appreciate it folks :D), I’ve decided to put together a tutorial on how I did them.

The inspiration for giving them a go came from two places, the first was the front cover for Dreadball showing the fancy holo glove. The second was the Nidavellir Flames, a gorgeous Forgefather team. With a good idea in my head form these sources as to what I wanted to do I set out to find some suitable materials. I knew I wanted to have a slight curve to them so my first thought was clear plastic straws (these still might be suitable), but could only find coloured ones in any local stores. I then realised I had some plastic pipettes which I got off ebay, a hundred only cost a few quid:

Pipettes

Pipettes

Turned out they where perfect for the task, so I proceeded to hack ’em apart.

Stage 1

Stage 1

All I needed form them was the top section so using just a pair of scissors I cut them off.

Stage 2

Stage 2

I then proceeded to cut these into strips a little bit bigger than the size needed (worth having the mini handy for this)

Stage 3

Stage 3

Then it was a case of trimming it down to the correct width to fit in the “projector” part of the wrist and curve of one of the ends. Again I just used a pair of small scissors for this.

Stage 4

Stage 4

Next I curved off the opposite end, making sure I cut it to give the desired length. On my minis I made the gloves on the strikers about 150% the size of the ones on the jacks, just to make them a wee bit different but I also thought the strikers variation would be that little bit better. At the end of the day the length is up to you, so long as it fits onto the model 🙂

Paints used

Paints used

Next up was painting them. Above are the colours I used for mine, but I recommend going for a colour that will compliment your team. All you need is a midtone, a lighter version of this, white and lahmian medium.

Stage 5

Stage 5

To start the painting I used Caledor sky right around the end of the glove coming up to where it joins at the projector. The best way to do this, and the following highlights, is using just the flat of the brush against the edge of the plastic.

Stage 6

Stage 6

Next was a 1:1 mix of Caledor Sky and Ice blue, going around the edge again but leaving a small section of the original colour near the projector end.

Stage 7

Stage 7

Next was the same again but with pure Ice Blue and again leaving a little of the last colour showing.

Stage 8

Stage 8

And finally for the edge was a 1:1 mix of Ice Blue and White, just on the top most curve.

Stage 9

Stage 9

The last paint to add is to the projector end. I wanted to leave this section clear to show the innards of the projector showing through, but because I needed to use superglue to affix them, this left the white residue showing all over the glove. This was done with a 2:1 mix of Caledor Blue and Lahmian Medium. Make sure your brush strokes are going from the left to right (using the picture above), as this means the strongest of the paint will be at the projector end.

Stage 10

Stage 10

Next is the same but with a 2:1 mix of Caledor sky/Ice Blue and Lahmian Medium. Just as before, leaving some of the original colour showing at the edge.

Stage 11

Stage 11

Next is 2:1 mix of Ice Blue and Lahmian Medium.

Stage 12

Stage 12

And finally the edge highlight of 1:1 Ice Blue and White. Then all you need to do is stick it onto the mini 🙂

And there you have it, a simple but effective way to give your models some Dreadball Gloves. If you have any questions or anything was not clear in the above please let me know and if you give it a go I would love to see your results 😀

Dreadball – Silver Centurions Almost Done!

With the final few details added today it’s just the bases and the threat markings on the clear hex(not sure what I’m doing with that yet) on the Centurions to do. Here’s how they are looking without that:

As you may have noticed I decided to add some Dreadball gloves to the Strikers and the Jacks, this was done with some plastic pipettes I had laying about with some careful cutting , and a wee touch of paint.

Next up, as I’ve said is the bases. These are gonna be a rough metal to match the pitch design I threw together this afternoon. This is the as-yet unnamed(may have to be the Colosseum?) home of the Silver Centurions:

Dreadball – More Silver Centurions!

Continued work on the Silver Centurions this morning, and with some helpful suggestions on another colour decided to do a few bits and pieces in gold. I also took the chance to add a couple of extra glowy bits :D. Just on the left hand of the strikers, and on the several studs on the Guards armour. Anyway, here they are:

For now its off to get in a few more league games at the Sunday meet up, and I’ll let you know how the Slammers get on 🙂

Dreadball – Silver Centurions Progress

The weekend has arrived so its onto painting some of my own stuff, and today I’ve made a wee bit of progress on the Centurions:

I’ve worked up the armour with some highlights to the desired colour as well as adding the glowy blue bits I want on them. The only other part I know what I’m doing with is the number panel. This will be a blue version of the digital display seen on the Gamma Slammers. I still think I need something else on these guys to really make ’em pop, and other than doing more glowy blue bits, I’m at a loss as to what. Any ideas from you readers out there would be greatly appreciated 😀

I also did a wee bit more to the logo and am happy to say this should be the final design. Let me know what you think?

Dreadball – Match Report

So the Dreadball League Edinburgh is coming along nicely and I’d like to give an update on the Gamma Slammers progress as well as a match report :D.

After my first defeat against the Playa H8ters, my next game was against some more pesky Veer-myn, the Ratfinks. This is one of the best and closest games I’ve had, with me winning 6-0 up until the last couple of rushes, and the Ratfinks managing to score enough strikes to secure a 1-0 victory :(. This means I’m now siting in 3rd behind both the damn Veer-myn teams, and the league table looking like this. Now onto my next game:

Gamma Slammers(Home) Vs The Boner Corp(Away)

The Boner Corp

The Boner Corp

I rolled up home so set up my team in a familiar fashion, right up at the line with the Guards, and the Jacks to the side of each of them. In response to this the Boner Corp set up defensively, along the 1/2pt strike zone line ensuring they are at least 6 away from my players.

Following the sound of the first whistle the ball shot out a mighty 6, landing on the slammers side of the pitch. The Slammers decided to start things off as they usually do; Slam, slam, and slam. A guard

Rush 4

Rush 4

dashed forward to get into contact with a Jack and swiftly injured him for 2 turns, following up with another slam against a striker. This time however he dodged to safety. One of the Jacks decided to go for a strike picking up the ball and getting into position for a 1 pointer, but failing his 2 dice 3+ test :(. The Corp took offense to an Orc being so far onto their half and set up a slam with a guard supported by a Jack and a striker! With furious laughter from the Orc, he managed to knock the puny human on his arse. Enraged the Corp Guard jumped to his feet and slammed the Orc into next week, leaving him injured for 3 turns! This left the ball fairly open and a Striker nipped in to pick it up.

The Slammers next rush was used to set up some defense as most of the Corp players where well down their own side of the pitch, the Corp then rushed up the field slamming as they went but didn’t even manage to put a dent in the Slammers armour, although opened enough space for a Striker to sprint up the pitch with the ball. Bad move Striker. One of the Orc’s  moved straight in and smashed the Striker to the floor, taking him out for 3 turns. This gave a Jack the opportunity to grab the ball, dash up-field and land a 3 pointer for the first strike of the game :).

Rush 6

Rush 6

In the next rush the ball fired out another mighty 6 making it onto the Corps half. A Striker saw his opportunity to shine, but needed a little extra to reach the ball, but failed his dash and instead fell face first onto the ball sending it flying out of his reach. With this the Corp player needed some extra actions so played a card to get to the ball with his second Striker, unfortunately he decided to imitate his teammate and dashed in the wrong direction. Into the floor. The Slammers went for some more carnage, and tried to get the opposing Guards off the pitch, but only managed to injure one for 2 turns. A Jack tries his luck again, grabs the ball, heads for a 2 pointer, but narrowly misses the required roll. Booo :(.

The Corp’s Strikers decided this was a good time to make up for flailing around on the floor trying to get the ball, double their stand up, grab the ball and sprint all the way to a strike zone. The Corp coach surprised the crowd by revealing and playing a throw card, but with only two dice misses the strike. The Slammers went for some good old bashes, with a Guard and Jack going after a Human Guard, winning the slam 6-0 and sending him off the field for 3 turns. The Jacks then turned their attention to the ball, grabbing it and sprinting into the Corps half of the pitch.

The Corp realising their in a tricky situation and sent a Jack chasing after the ball carrier, but it dawned on them they could not make it so decided to play a card instead. Mysteriously the ball disappeared from the Goblins hands, and shot out at centre field, right next to a Striker. Damn sneaky Humans. The Striker really goes for the glory getting all the way up to go for a 4 pointer, but with only one dice to get it, another miss inevitably happens. With the ball well up the Slammers half of the pitch something needs to be done to get rid of the Corp players up there with it. A Guard attempts to evade out of his face to face confrontation with a Jack, but trips over his own feet and falls flat. The closest standing guard goes for the Striker who just missed, but only manages to push him back. Knowing he needs to get up there, the Guard on his back flips to his feet, rushes up, and slams the Striker into the injury box for 2 turns. With the end of the game close at hand a Goblin rushes up to get as close as possible to the ball, but does

Rush 9

Rush 9

not reach it.

The Corp goes for a push to get the ball but none of the downed players manage to double their stand up test. This left the coach no choice but to get as close to the ball as possible, but as with the Slammers they can’t quite reach it. The Slammers, now on their last rush, attempt to get a last strike in. The closest Goblin grabs the ball and manages to sprint and dash all the way to the 4pt zone, but with all the actions for him used up. Trying their luck with a card, in the hopes of getting a free action or a throw, their hopes are quickly dashed drawing up an event card.

This left the Corp one last rush to try and pull it out the hat. Needing to get the ball a Jack rushes in but only manages to push the ball carrier back, the Jack knows this is the last chance so pushes in for another try, but the Goblins superior speed means he dodges straight out the way and ensuring the Corp can do nothing else to get a strike in.

And with that the final whistle was blown, giving the Gamma Slammers a 3-0 victory.

Overall it was a good game, humans seem to hold their own against the Marauders with this being the first game they have not killed an opposing player. With a few more of our strikes getting in, it could have been a much closer game but our inability to roll dice meant only the one strike was scored (and that was with the help of coaching dice!). The end of match phase didn’t have much going on apart from the Corp’s income. Because of the difference in team value(147-104), the corp got a total of 5 dice, gaining 25mc. This got them 2 coaching staff and an extra coaching dice! The Slammers on the other hand got one Jack advancing, gaining Running Interference and a total of 8mc in the bank.

I hope you enjoyed the write up and please let me know what you think as I will probably end up doing more in the future 😀
