Hydra Progress Update 2!

More work has been done on the Hydra’s this week, with the main hull and metals done, and the red started.

Once the red is complete it’s only the details and adding some dirt to the tracks to do, so should be complete fairly soon. Then its onto an option of things, might be a dreadball team, more Tau or even something completely random…

Hydra Progress Update!

I now have a good start on the hydra’s, the main hull colour and the battle damage are just about done:

I’ve used a common method of salting for the battle damaged, and found it a lot easier the more tanks I’ve done. The basic process is as follows;

  • Apply undercoat, once dry paint the hull the colour you want showing through. In the instance of these tanks I’ve gone for an orangy/brown rusty colour.
  • Then its a coat of hairspray whilst applying salt, this not only helps the salt stick to the areas you want it, but also helps ensure the underlying colour does not scrub off.
  • Once dry it’s then time to apply the main hull color, black in this case, and highlight it up.
  • Again, once dry, its time to scrub off the salt. I used an old toothbrush and some warm water for this.
  • Once this is done you have what is pictured above (hopefully ;)).

I have noticed a few deposits of salt still left, so going to do a bit more scrubbing today and then get on with the next stage 😀

Fire Warriors Finished!

Finished the second lot of 5 Fire Warriors this afternoon, whilst waiting for bits of the Hydra’s to dry, and here they are:

And here’s a shot with the whole Gang 😀

Getting so close to my gaming target now, I’m sweating in anticipation(This could be in part to the unusual heatwave we are experiencing in Edinburgh). I have a box of Fire Warriors which should now be ready to pick up and after them all I need is a one more battlesuit. But before that I have the Hydra’s to do, of which I’ll be popping an update up over the weekend…

Dreadball – Boxed Game Contents Review

5771302_orig

DreadBall – The Futuristic Sports Game is a sci-fi 2 player sports board game that is fast, fun and tactical – play never resets as a 200mph weapons-grade titanium ball is flung from player to player. Fast throws, tough slams and deft dodges are just some of the trademark actions your players can make.

Recently I’ve had a hankering for a game that, unlike 40k, does not require a fairly large amount of expensive models and at least a couple of hours to have a proper game. My first instint was to go for something like Necromunda or Bloodbowl, but I felt I should leave the GW nest and go for something a bit different. With this in mind I searched through some of the other miniature producers and happened across Dreadball and recognized the name as a mate I see too rarely was getting into it and only had good things to say. A bit more digging and it seemed to tick all of my boxes, minimal models required, good setting, models that sparked my imagination and an affordable price tag. Set on what I wanted I set out to my local hobby shop to grab up a copy and I would like to let you know what I think of the box and whats inside (I will be popping up a further review of the game play once I’ve settled into it and have more of a handle on the intricacies of the rules). £40 later and….

First up the miniatures. The box comes with two teams of ten, the Corporation (humans) and the Marauders (orx). The models for both teams look great, they are nowhere near as detailed as anything GW produces and are scaled to what I would call a more realistic level (GW minis always tend to be of a bit more heroic scale). They are made from a plastic/resin mix which I found to be less malleable than other models I’ve worked with, but seems to give a great strength and would be confident they would easily survive the dreaded fall from the table. They couldn’t be simpler to put together and I wouldn’t be surprised if you could clip ’em together and play straight out the box. Overall very chuffed with them and highly anticipating getting them painted up :).

Onto the rest of the contents. Included in the box are 2 balls, a ref, a set of cards, dice, the game board and a roster pad. Comparing with the quality of say Fantasy Flight boxed games(which I’ve always found to be top notch), it is a little sub-par. Not to say they are a bad or horrible quality, just average. But saying that they get the job done and that’s what matters. After having a look online they do a set of acrylic tokens that would make a great addition to anyone’s set, just wish they had thrown it in with the box 😦

Everything Else

Everything Else

The rulebook on the other hand looks and feels great, the artwork and layout really sticks to the aesthetic of the game. The rules I’ve found to be laid out in a suitable fashion, with a few hic ups here and there. Nothing major, just a few rules that seem to be in a bit of a silly place but a bit of patience and I had no problem. One of the major things I found lacking was no reference sheet or page. I’ve always found these to be incredibly handy, and almost expect it of any rulebook.

In conclusion I’m very happy with my purchase, and think £40 for this lot is a great deal. After having my one game (although we got some rules wrong and I ended up with half my team dead before the first half :() I am really looking forward to playing some more and can see myself getting fairly invested in this game. For this reason alone I would encourage anyone thinking about getting this to take the plunge, and if your not get down to a store where you can try it and I think you’ll like what you find 😀

Fire Warriors Finished!

The Fire Warriors are finished, well the first half of the squad is anyway 🙂

Fire Warriors

With these guys done, I will be moving onto the tanks for the Death Korp commission. That’s just gonna be the 2 Hydras for now, with the basilisk getting done for the beginning of next month. Since the tanks have a fair bit of drying periods early on during the process, I’m hoping I can get a little more to the other half of this squad done in the down time.

In other news managed to get a single game of Dreadball in, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll be looking to pop up a review of the game contents tomorrow, with a further review of the game play once I get a few more games in (really hard to judge a game properly, until you have a few games under your belt :D).

Fire Warrior Progress plus New Toys!

I’ve made less progress than I wanted to on the Fire Warriors over the last couple of days, due primarily to a very generous mother in law, more on that later as here are the Fire Warriors:

The red on the armour and the black sections have now been completed, so onto the detailing next!

As the mother in law has just received her pension she decided my wife and I needed some money to treat ourselves. Obviously my mind went straight to toys and which ones where so shiny they had to be added to my collection.

I’ve been wanting to get into something outside of GW for a while now, other than board or card games (have played a fair few fantasy flight games, but not a lot else), but not something that would encompass a large force or expensive models. After a fair amount of browsing I decided on Dreadball by Mantic. Violent futuristic sports! Who could resist!

Dreadball!

Dreadball!

The main box was the obvious place to begin (really wish I had got in on the kickstarter, as some great deals). This gives me a good place to start and learn the rules. So far I’ve had a good peruse of what came with it and am suitably pleased. I should be getting a game tomorrow, so will be looking to pop up a review of the contents and the game play in the next couple of days…

Fire Warrior Progress…

Today was spent getting the red started on the Fire Warrior Squad, all it is at this point is a base of Khorne red mixed with a wee bit of brown (sorry cant remember which one :() with a highlight of mephiston red. From this point I’m going to split them for painting, as I find it easier to go in small chunks, and paint five at a time. Going to try and get the red completed on the first five tonight…

Fire Warriors Started!

Received the first of my Fire Warriors Today! Wooooo 😀 so got crackin into them straight away and they are now ready to be undercoated. I have to say I can’t wait to get started on painting these guys, as I’ve been really enthused to get the Tau to a playable level. Its now been at least 2 months since I last had a game of 40k and I’m really getting the itch now but I need to stick to my plan of only playing with painted models.

Fire Warriors

Here they are, fairly simple as there’s not a lot you can do with them being basic infantry and all.

Cadre Fireblade Finished!

Finished off the final details on the Fireblade and am very chuffed with the results. Although the sept and cloak markings took a bit of patience I think I got the effect I was looking for.  Now all I need to do is think up some background for this chap, as I always like a bit of a story to go with each of the models/units in an army, especially an HQ.

I do know that this guy will be leading the smaller forces I take, with a Battlesuit Commander taking over as the points go up. I have a list which I will share for you that is something of a target for the first chunk of the force:

Cadre Fireblade

10 Fire Warriors

10 Fire Warriors

5 Pathfinders

5 Pathfinders

Crisis Battlesuit:

Fusion Blaster, Burst Cannon, Target Lock, 2 x Gun Drones

Crisis Battlesuit:

2 x Burst Cannon, Drone Controller, 2 x Gun Drones

Which is 500pts on the nose. I think this is a good starting point as it is made up of a core units of any other list I’ll be making and I’ll explain why.

I’ll always have Fire Warriors as my troops because I really am not a fan of the Kroot models. I realise this will leave a fairly diverse squad out of the mix but I’m more of a painter than a gamer these days so aesthetics will always win out when I’m building my lists.

Pathfinders I feel are too cheap to not be taken, considering what they can do. Sitting these chaps behind the Fire Warriors and using there markerlights helps the rest of the force , but they have the bonus of being a great unit to support using their carbines. Although if they do get targeted, caught in the open, assaulted, looked at in a funny way etc. they will very likely suffer a horrible demise.

Battlesuits I love. I will be taking one unit of each kind in my completed force (a long way off yet :(), so the obvious place to start is with a couple of XV8’s. The main idea with these guys is that they eventually form a squad of 3, with 2 battlesuits with burst cannon, fusion blaster and target lock and one with 2 burst cannons, drone controller and the full complement of gun drones. I like the idea of having a unit that can pump out 28 strength 5 shots and has an extra couple melta shots that can target a different unit 😀

As this is my target I still need the Fire Warriors and another battlesuit. I already have a box of Fire Warriors on the way, so hopefully get to starting them very soon…

Fireblade Progress

Really getting into the Cadre Fireblade now, and not gonna be long until he is finished.

I’ve been working on his cloak, the blue sections as well as finishing the skin and facial features. The cloak will be getting some extra work with some kind of freehand design, but not decided on what yet. I’m probably just gonna stick to some tau-ish lettering, in red, around the edge and keep it fairly simple. The reason I’ve decided on red for this is I think it will blend in with the rest of the model much better, I’m not looking for it to be flashy or in your face cos I don’t think that’s what the Tau are all about.

So continuing on with this chap I still have all of the sept markings to add, as well as lenses, both on the model and on the base. So as I said, not far to go 😀
