Dreadball Xtreme – Free Agents!

Free-Agents

My next batch of models for Dreadball Xtreme, the free agents!

After the hard times I had with the Kalyshi(I will stop going on about it eventually), I thought I’d treat myself to the free agents as they have a good amount of variety to them. I got stuck in and here’s what I came away with…

My favorite of the Free Agents, the Yndij Reaver. I wanted to give him a bit more of a veteran look so went for some whiter looking fur to help with this.

Went a wee bit different from the studio paint scheme on these. The Spinipede was a bit of a homage to my old Tyranid army and the Pusk I just wanted to make look a bit more alien.

These guys(do robots have gender?) I wanted to look like what they are, over used practise bots. I knew I wanted a touch of colour to make them stand out at least a little so threw in some blue glowy bits, the chevrons and the red helmets for the tie into the rest.

These two where the models I liked the least from the Free Agents although the Treebeast wasn’t so bad once I got cracking into him.

Finally we have the Zee Buccaneers. These guys were a doddle as they’re so small ti doesn’t take long to get ’em painted up.

These guys were good fun to paint. Whilst they still had a fair amount of mold lines, they where a lot easier to clean off but I think I may have missed a couple :(.  I tried to keep a lot of the main colours used similar to the Kalyshi and Blaine as to tie them together when a team is made up. This also got me to wondering if I want to do the same with the rest of my teams, so that no matter what sponsor I use my player pool will all look good together. Something to ponder before I paint the next team…

Dreadball Xtreme – Kalyshi Team!

Kalyshi-Team

Started to get stuck into my first Xtreme team, and I thought I would start off with the Kalyshi becuase I liked the models the most. That turned out to be incorrect, but before I open that can of worms let’s take a look at the team…

That’s the main eight players and the two prone markers done. I was planning on doing maybe a couple of more to give a bit more flexibility but wanted to stick to what’s out the box at the moment, and I’m glad I did. I found it really hard going to clean and paint these. The mold lines on these models, whilst not numerous, are in some of the most horrible places. Some such mold lines where down their neck and chest, which is a really obvious place, that is really hard to get the right angle to clean. Further to this the models lack a lot of definition leaving a lot of the details looking flat or a bit messy and ambiguous as to what is what.

I decided to do something different with the paint scheme and, inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy’s Krylorians, decided to go for a pink skin with a dark armour.

Overall I was unhappy with the models and in the end know they are not my best work as a result.

In addition to the team I also painted up their sponsor, Blaine…

In contrast to the Kalyshi, Blaine is awesome. He had little to no mold lines and the definition was great. So Blaine was a lot more fun to paint, and very rewarding after the time I had with the Kalyshi.

I do plan on painting up the Kalyshi MVP, Kailasa, some time in the future in the same scheme for two reasons. To be used as the MVP but also to be used as a guard so I can use this team as a standard Dreadball Asterian team.

Dreadball – A’teo Adysi MVP!

Another mini I’ve been looking forward to painting for a while is the Azure Forest MVP, A’teo Adysi, and I’m very pleased with how things went…

A'teo-Adysi-1 A'teo-Adysi-2

Inspiration hit when it came to the threat markings and I think it adds a wee bit more character to the mini, although I did realise after finishing it up that he has 360 vision which really means it should go all the way round the base 😦

Dreadball – Zee Team Finished!

My 5th Dreadball team, the Irn Bruisers, and their coach have now been finished and here they are:

Zees4 Zees5

I used the Gabe model for my coach, Mr. Barr, as I happen to have one spare who will eventually get done up for use as an MVP

Coach1 Coach2

As you can see I made up a logo for them imitating their inspration, the great drink that is Irn Bru. I also tried out some clear paints on the bases for something a bit different. I did this with a mix of the red and yellow from the Tamiya clear range. I’m pleased with the result and think it will be something I’ll do again in the future with some different colours 🙂

Next up will be some MVP’s 😀

Dreadball – Zee Team!

I’m back! After a wee break from hobby things in general I’ve jumped back in with getting some of the Dreadball stuff sitting about unpainted finished and the first thing I wanted to do was my Zee team, the Irn Bruisers!

Zees2 Zees3

If you’re at all familier with a certain Scottish soft drink you’ll know exactly where I got the inspiration for these guys 🙂

May 2014 – A Month in Review

I’ve decided to post a wee gallery at the end of each month to show a roundup of the hobby prohjects I’ve completed in that time. This is so people will be able to get a look at everything in one place, but also to give me an idea of what I’m getting through. I’m also looking to try at least one new hobby method each month, such as the icicles I tried this month, to add to my hobby skills and hopefully this will encourage me a bit more.

So without further ado, here’s what I’ve done this month…

Deadzone – Dreadball Pitch Terrain Finished!

The Dreadball pitch has now had a lick of paint and is all the better for it 🙂

Pitch1 Pitch2 Pitch3

I decided to add some of the colours I used on the buildings to give the pitch a link to it’s surroundings. So I added it on the top half of the concrete barriers and the goals/nets/tubes/scoring mechanism. I also added some colouration on the pitch itself in the form of strike zone markings and a centre line. Both of these were applied by airbrush after a coat of hairspray, so I could give them a chipped worn look. I didn’t bother with any salt on these as I wanted much larger areas of chipping. I also added a couple of white crosses to give at least a vague idea of where one cube begins and another ends 🙂

Deadzone – Dreadball Pitch Terrain!

An idea struck me whilst I was making up the Antenocitis Billboards and adding the Dreadball poster in particular. What if there where street style Dreadball pitches, like you see in basketball and football in real life? Not something like used in Xtreme, but something used by the kids and adults alike of the cities and colonies. With that in mind I set out to try and figure out the best way to make something like that and discovered this on Antenocitis Workshop:

Plasticard-Hex

This would work really well to get the main shape onto a base. I had a couple of wooden backs from frames lying about, intended for basing some terrain, so cut one to the size I wanted, 3 x 2 cubes or 9″ x 6″. With that base size in place I had a limit to the size of the pitch and how much of the above to cut into shape and size, I wanted it a little smaller than the base so I could add a few extra bits around the edges, specifically some barriers and some strike posts. Using some of the Antenocitis barriers, a few bits of Deadzone terrain, metal tubing and a wee bit of guitar string, this is what I came up with…

Dreadball-Pitch

It looks a little small when compared with the size of the figures, but I think any larger and it would take up way too much space on the board, and I think at the end of the day it does what it’s supposed to do- add a characterful piece of terrain to the board, something that makes it look like people did at one time or another live and play in the Deadzone 🙂

Now to get the blighter painted 😀

Dreadball – Veer-myn Numbering!

The final stage for the Veer-myn was adding the numbering, neither me or the client had a good idea as to where we were gonna go with this so I set out to test out a couple of things…

Jpeg Jpeg Jpeg

The first 3 I tried out, from top to bottom, where a simple scratched on number over the base grey using a deep brown for the number, a white number over the orange used on the shoulder pads and finally the same as the top but with silver inside the scratches. The top one seemed to be the favorite of both me and the client, but it needed something more…

Jpeg Jpeg

At the clients request I tried it out with an orange stripe on a white background, and the same stripe on the original grey background. The client preffered the look of the whte background, so that’s what I went with…

StrikersB StrikersA Guards

The only one done any differently was Reek Rolat, who had the grey background, to tie in with his shoulder guards…

Reek-RolatUnfortuanatley the client still wasn’t keen on them, and decided he would like to have the transfers on them instead. So off to the local shop I went and picked some up 🙂

Here’s how the finished product looks…

Numbers Numbers2 Numbers3 Numbers4

Had to re-jig some of the numbers, as there wasn’t enough on the trasfer sheets. But got there in the end 🙂
